Ridge Traverse 2A cat. dif. (Sokol)

Ridge Traverse. View from the side of Novy Svet village. The route is on the border of the 4th sector of Sokol mountain. The description is given according to the "Guidebook" on alpine routes of Crimea. Sokol mountain.

Approach Path

The approaches are quite simple: from the pocket near the road, above the Bay of Love, up the path. (Actually, it's not even a path, but a whole road! — ed.)

Route Description

The landmark for the start of the route is 15 m to the left along the ledge from the memorial plaque (start of "Youth Eternal"), a hook is hammered to the left of the ascent fissure.

R0–R1: 50 m, 5B. Belaying via bolts and pitons. There's no need to climb the juniper, go to the left. Station on bolts.

R1–R2: 40 m, 5B. Belaying via bolts and pitons. Station on bolts.

R2–R3: 40 m, 5B. Belaying via bolts and pitons. Station on bolts.

R3–R4: 50 m, 5A. Movement along the ridge with self-belaying. Station on a bolt and two pitons.

R4–R5: 40 m, 4B. Station on a tree after the ridge. It's necessary to consider that from R4 to R5 the audibility is very poor.

R5–R6: 50 m, 5A. Transition along the ledge and then up to a large pine tree via climbing. Station on a tree.

R6–R7: 40 m, 5B. Belaying via pitons + self-belaying. Station on a pine tree.

R7–R8: 50 m, 5C. Belaying via bolts + self-belaying, along the ridge. Station on the yayla.

R8–R9: 100 m on foot through "gardens". Exit 10 m to the right of the geodetic trigonometric point.

Recommended Equipment:

  • rope 50–55 m,
  • standard set of stoppers,
  • 10–12 quickdraws,
  • 2–3 large and 2 medium slings.
  • Bring a camera!

General Impression:

A beautiful, panoramic traverse with a medium level of climbing. Time to complete for an average team is 2–2.5 hours.[1]
