About

Karavshin is one of the remote and most technically challenging mountaineering areas in the Western Tian Shan, located in the Alay Range on the southwest of Kyrgyzstan, near the border with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The region is known primarily for its extensive granite walls, big wall routes, and high concentration of complex technical lines. Due to the characteristic terrain and scale of the walls, Karavshin is often referred to as "Asian Patagonia".

The peak elevations in the area range from 4500 to over 5600 m. The most famous peaks and massifs include: Slesov Peak (5216 m), Korzhenevskaya Peak, Asan Peak (4230 m), Usan Peak (4378 m), Yellow Wall, Pyramid, as well as numerous unnamed towers and walls. Many routes traverse sheer and overhanging granite walls up to 1000 m high or more, making the area iconic for big wall climbing and challenging first ascents.

The Karavshin terrain is characterized by powerful monolithic granites of high quality with a developed system of cracks, slabs, and corners. Most classic routes have a complexity category ranging from 5A to 6B, and even medium-category lines require confident rock technique, грамотной тактики, reliable equipment, and high autonomy.

Approaches to the walls are typically long and involve setting up a base camp. The area is remote from settlements and infrastructure, with unstable communication and extremely limited possibilities for external assistance. All ascents require complete self-sufficiency and readiness to handle non-standard situations.

The main climbing season is from July to September when the weather is relatively stable. Nevertheless, even during this period, sudden changes in conditions, snowfalls, and strong winds are possible. Snow and ice routes are less common and usually play a supporting role in relation to the rock terrain.

Karavshin is an area for experienced climbers seeking long, technically saturated, and serious routes. It demands high preparation and a well-coordinated team but offers some of the best granite big walls and the most impressive terrain in Central Asia.
