Brief Overview of the Ascent Area
The Ergaki massif is located in the central part of the Western Sayan. The massif stretches approximately 80 km from west to east and is about 60 km wide. The Ergaki massif is heavily dissected, featuring numerous steep rock walls, deep river valleys, and lakes. The terrain is mountainous and forested with a dense river network. The relief is mid-mountainous, with prevailing heights between 1450–2100 m. The highest point is 2281 m.
The weather in the area is highly unpredictable, with significant precipitation. This region is characterized by an East Siberian climate type, with long, harsh winters. Snow in the high-altitude zone melts only by the end of June and falls again by the end of August. Summers are cool, with daytime temperatures in July ranging from +10 °C to +15 °C, and nighttime temperatures between +2 °C and +6 °C. June sees an abundance of midges and mosquitoes.
Peak Zvezdny is the second-highest peak (2265 m) and is considered the most challenging summit in the area.
The region is very promising for mountaineering, featuring steep rock walls with height differences of up to 600 m.
